Action against new coal-fired power stations
Nature Conservation Council of NSW Action against new coal-fired power plants in NSW4.30pm - 6.00pm. Tuesday 27 July 2010
Sydney CBD
Meet at cnr Martin Place and Elizabeth Street, then proceed to prominent intersections and major transport hubs in the CBD
The NSW Opposition will meet at the beginning of August to discuss policy opportunities. We want to send them a clear message that the community supports an end to polluting coal power and a just transition to a clean energy future.
Our action earlier this month collected more than 690 signatures in just over an hour on a petition requesting that the NSW Parliament prohibit the building of new coal-fired power stations; develop a responsible phase out plan for existing coal power generation; and support job creation in renewable energy industries. With your help, we can grab the attention of even more Sydneysiders by holding our No New Coal signs up at major intersections and outside busy transport hubs. Together, we can get afternoon commuters signing our petition to Parliament in record numbers.
The momentum for an end to coal-fired power generation in NSW is building. Our efforts today can help turn back NSW's pollution and ensure clean energy production becomes bigger
and better.
Please register here so we can keep in touch about details and make sure we're on track for a great event.
Hope you can join us! Pepe Clarke

Beyond Coal...100% Renewables in the Hunter?
Climate Action NewcastleOn Wednesday 4th August Climate Action Newcastle will be holding a forum for the community to learn about the potential of renewable energy, and start talking about a future where we don't need to burn dirty coal to produce electricity anymore. The panellists will speak on a range of related issues, including the technical challenges and solutions, how communities can take action to create the future they want to see, and how the transition will affect jobs. A representative from Beyond Zero Emissions will be attending to launch their recently released Zero Carbon Australia Stationary Energy Plan. This plan shows how we could provide 100% Renewable energy for Australia by 2020, including how much it would cost. Via skype, we will hear from Scott Kinear about how a community have set up their own wind farm in Victoria, and from Dr Luis Crespo about how Concentrating Solar Thermal technology is providing baseload power in Spain. There will be lots of questions and answers so please come along to listen, learn and participate. The forum starts at 6.30pm at Newcastle City Hall. Entry is by a gold coin donation. We hope you can join us. For more info or media enquiries please contact John L Hayes on 0400 171 602, or jlhayes@bigpond.com.
Walk Against Warming
Nature Conservation Council of NSWWalk Against Warming
12 midday, Sunday 15 August
Belmore Park - right across the road from Central Station
Bring your friends, banners and placards! In the lead-up to the federal election, w're asking Australia's political leaders to: "Walk with the people, not the big polluters" Let's put an end to the political delays and backflips on climate action, rising pollution and the free ride for the big polluters.
At the last federal election, millions of Australians voted for a government who would take action on climate change. Instead, we got more political delays and backflips, rising pollution and a free ride for the big polluters. So once again, we are pleased to announce that every State and Territory in Australia will be taking to the streets for Walk Against Warming 2010 to tell our leaders: "Walk with the people, not the big polluters".
Due to the significance of this year's federal election, we want Walk Against Warming to be the biggest ever held.
Together, we will remind government that we're doing our bit on climate change. We're working hard to reduce greenhouse pollution. We're saving water and energy. We're buying greenpower. We're forming climate action groups. It's time for the government to do their bit.
We are asking for your help in four ways:
1. Walk on the day: we need a strong turn out to show the Government that we want real action on climate change.
2. Volunteer: We are looking for volunteers on the day and in the lead up to the event
In the lead up, we are looking for people to help with logistics and to distribute posters and flyers.
On the day, we are asking people to volunteer their time to help with bucket collections, marshalling and administration.
If you can volunteer, please email Rachel Mimmo rmimmo@nccnsw.org.au This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with your name, area you live, best contact details and what you will be able to do either on the day or in the lead up. If you have volunteered before, please put down what you did and whether you will be willing to do that again this year.
3. Organise a regional walk: We are looking for people to organise regional walks in their area. We will provide you with templates for fliers and posters to distribute in your areas promoting your walk.
We'll list regional walks on the new Walk Against Warming website. People from regional towns will be able to register online like everyone else. If you can organise a regional walk, please email Su Fei Tan sftan@nccnsw.org.au This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with your name, area you live, best contact details and the walk location. Let us know if you have organised a regional walk before.
4. Donate: Please make a donation today and help support Australia's biggest day of climate action.
